Short Film vs. Feature Film

From watching both the short film and the feature film their was a lot of differences between the two. In the short film there was no diaglogue at all. But it did have a lot of sound effects that helped the audience see whats happening without the use of dialogue. I thought it wasn't going to be any diaglogue in the feature film but when the 2 character came in the scene he was talking. In the short film it was only one monster but in the feature film so many monsters. The feature film showed how all of the characters were all made and why the scenery was the way it was. In the short film we didn't know where they were or even why they were there. The feature film had many different locations and it showed it being a whole town where they were instead of being just one room. The feature film also showed the origin of the monsters, but I still didn't understand why the monsters wanted to kill the dolls. One of the most known differences between the short film and the feature film is the amount of characters in the film. In the short film it was only the two characters and the one monster but in the feature film it was 9 characters and the many many monsters it was. Adding characters to the feauture film helped add more "meat" to the movie. It added to the storyline so the director could fill in the storyline and give us more back story. The characters helped fill in those gaps in the short film that left us wondering why. Like why is he called 9, or why can't they talk? It was a bunch of questions answered in the feature film that wasn't answered in the short film. This assignment really helped me learn alot about creative an effective short film. Like less characters helps keep a storyline short and sweet, and it also helps reduce the need for a lot of character development.

Research 9, feature film

First I wanted to start off by saying this movie was really good. It was lowkey sacary, but it was still good though. If had to rate this movie on direction style I would definetly give it a 10/10. I give it this score because the director paid so close attention to detail to the storyline. He made sure every scene was explianed , whether it was through the camera angles or through the scene it self. I loved how the director showed teamwork through the characters and that each one of them needed each other. I also loved how each character looked and had a different characteristics that made them further victorious. If I could give this movie a genre, without looking at the real genre I would say this movie would be a thriller, sci-fi movie. In the beginning of the movie, I really enjoyed the asmr before of the character started talking. One thing I didn't really understand about the movie was the constant showing of the disk piece. They continued to show the three symbols on the disk like we haven't saw it over and over again. Another thing that confused me was the many climaxes the director added. First it started with the guy that died and then he got tooken away by the monster. Which I thought was the climax of the movie but it wasn't, it was only the rising action. When they killed the first monster I thought the movie was over but the climax stairs went higher and higher. But the character devolopment in this movie was really good in this movie. It started with the guy on the left being scared and 2 being the hero. But at the end of the movie he was the hero that killed the monster to save his land. Even their leader, 1, he started as a selfish man that didn't want to save his other friends, and at the end he sacrificed his self to save his friends.

Research 9, short film

I just finished watching the short film, 9, and it was really good. I was really shocked that it was only 7 minutes long. It was honestly a great storyline. I honestly loved the directors directing style. Even in the seven minutes he manged to capture a beginning, middle, and an end. Your probably thinking that of course he has a beginning, middle, and end, its a full movie. The reason I say that though is because I feel that will be the hardest part for me to portray. The director did all this without using dialogue. The director let us in to his movie to let us fully understand the meaning of the movie using only visuals. Throughout the whole movie he kept his viewers on edge and kept us wanting to see more. The director used angles and shots to show the importance of each scene. In the short 7 minutes the director gave us minimal character development with the characters. The guy that didn't end up dying in the movie was first saw to be scared and timid. Then further in the movie you see him conquer his fear of the beast and find a way to kill him. I also loved how he did a cartoon version of a short film. Thhe way the director paid so close attention to the amount of detail in this movie. The detail in the stitch of the charaters in the film was closely studied. In the movie it gave a solution from the beginning to the end.

Genre Choice For Film

After all that research I'm going with the drama genre. I feel like my pitch goes with the genre a lot more than the other genre themes. I chose this genre because I feel that the drama genre will give me more wiggle room to be creative in my storyline. I'm still not sure of my exact storyline yet. Even though thriller and crime are great genres, I don't think I have a storyline for either of them. Since I've already exploreed the thriller genre I wanted to pick something new. Even though I still don't have a set storyline yet, I feel that this will be fun. I'm still waiting to see what idea comes to me for this project. All the other projects were a little simplier because I had so much inspiration since I was in school. I feel like being in school gave me more a creative outlet because I was around other people. Unlike other courses in school, this class allows students to be creative and express themselves. This course has help me as well because I never knew how much I like directing until I took this class. I've never been so creative until I took this class. I like how we can take a genre and create a short film out of thin air. And it can be whatever you want it to be. Even though I don't know my exact direction yet, I have real high hopes for this project. We have had lots of practice in filming but we haven't did a whole movie. Especially not a 5 minute movie. I never thought I would even be interested in a media career. I remember in the beginnning of the class the instructors said that after this class it would ruin the way I watch movies, and it definetly has, but not in a bad way. It helped me to be more aware ofwhat I'm watching.

Genre Reasearch-Crime, Thriller, and Drama

The genre I will research first will be crime. The common camera angles, movements, and shots for this genre are high angle, low angle, eye level, tracking shot, trunk shot, crane shot, and zoom. Some of the common sounds in this genre are gun shots, police sirens, digetic sound, non-digetic sound, sound bridge, dialogue, and footsteps. The common mis-en-scene of this genre are the decor which is usually broken glass, a rundown warehouse, and police stations. Some of the props in this genre are a police car, a getaway car, guns, money, and drugs. Some of the costumes in this genre are police uniforms and dark clothes for the criminals. Some of the lighting used in these type of movies are basic lighting, cinematic lighting, hard film lighting and motirated lighting. The common editing in this genre is cross cutting, dissolve, fade in, fade out, shot reverse shot, and reaction shot. Some crime films are Law and Order, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Criminal Minds, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Zodiac, and The Killer. The elements that I liked about this genre is the criminal act in the movies and all the police elemets included in the movie. Some of the elements I don't like about this genre is that it's so predictable and now the titles tell the movie before I watch it. The next genre I will research is the thriller genre. The common camera angles used in this genre were eye level, high angle, low angle, and dutch. The common camera shots used in this genre were long shot, medium long shot, medium shot, close up, extreme close up, two shot, three shot, and over the shoulder. The camera movements in this genre are commonly pan, flash pan, tilt, tracking shot, trunk shot, and crane shot. The common sound used in this genre is diegetic sound, non-digetic sound, sound bridge, sound motif, dialogue, voice over, score, incidental music, and ambient sound. The mis-en-scene in this genre is natural make-up, smuged eye make-up to show fear and some of the locations in this genre are haunted houses and some of the props used are guns and knives and other weapons. The common editing used in the genre are cross cutting, cutaway, insert, shot reverse shot, eyeline match, jumpcut, reaction shot. Some films in this genre are Don't Let Go, Us, Happy Death Day, Bird Box, and The Perfect Guy. The elements I like about this genre is that it's so unexpected, you'll think you know the storyline but it will totally change. The elements I don't like are that it can be scary, because I don't like surprises. The next and final genre that I will research will be drama. The common CAMS in this genre are close up, long shot, high angle, over the shoulder, medium shot, extreme close up, trunk shot, crane shot, stock shot, zoom, tracking shot, tilt, pan, medium long shot, medium close up, two-shot, three-shot, eye level, and establishing shot. The common sound in this genre diegetic sound, sound bridge, sound motif, dialogue, voiceover, incidental music, and ambient sound. Some of the location in the drama genre is jail, court room, and maybe someones house. In this genre the usual costusmes are usually everyday clothes. Some of the props used are cellphones and some weapons. The common editing used in the genre are cross cutting, cutaway, insert, shot reverse shot, eyeline match, jumpcut, reaction shot. Some example films in this genre are The Hate U Give, Avengers: Endgame, Lady Bird, A Star is Born, and Selma. The elements that I like in this genre are that it really connects with the audience and makes me want to continue watching. The elements that I don't like is that films in this genre always leaves the audience on a cliff hanger.

Genres I'd Like to Research

Since my pitch is "Sometimes the unknown, is unknown for a reason," it gives a very wide range of the genres it could relate to. I know in my previous blog I explained a potential storyline, but I'm still not sure that that is what I really want to do. Some of the genres that can go with this pitch are thriller, drama, and crime. Since you all already know my original plan, you all should that my original genre was drama. I'm really exicited this project because we explore other genres as well as the one I originally wanted to do. This actually opens my options because it lets me see a different perspective of the project. It lets me research and get more inspration for different storylines I can try. I was actually struggling to figure out which genre to pick because I wanted to research. I wanted to add comedy and action to see how far I can go with this pitch. Maybe I'll still research it for myself just so I can learn more about the genres. The reason I want to research thriller is because I feel that that genre is the easiest to portray in a movie. The reason I say that is because thriller genres are easy to come up with storylines for. I did use the thriller genre before so I think it will be a great way refresh my brain a little on what I've might've forgotten. I want to research the drama genre as well since that was my original plan for the movie. I hope that researching this genre maybe gives me more options for storyline ideas. Researching this genre will help me portay this genre better because I will know the ins and outs of the whole genre. I also wanted to research the crime genre because I never actuallythought my pitch could go in that direction. I think it will be very fun to see how I can potray my pitch during this genre.

Pitch Blog

For this blog I will be explaining my final pitch for my movie. I honestly had the hardest time picking my final pitch. I feel like I had a hard time coming up with a storyline becasue I didn't have any inspiration. Like last year, it was easy to come up with storylines because I had students around to bounce ideas off of. Since I am home, I had to now bounce my ideas off my family, and they were no help at all. So I'm not sure I'm supposed to tell you all this, but I had to google some story ideas. I eventually saw something that gave me the storyline I chose, and ideas started pouring out of my brain. I came up with a path I wanted to go in for this storyline so that it can have a beginnning, middle, and end. Now for the moment you've all been waiting for, my pitch. My pitch is that,"Sometimes the unknown is unknown for a reason." So I was thinking it could be about a young girl, but not too young, maybe like 17-18 years old. She grew with a man in her life, that she knows as her father. But she found a photobook that look like it was supposed to be hidden and she opened it. It started off with her seeing a bunch of old pictures of herself and old pictures of her mother. She eventually gets to a page where she sees herself sittimg on a man's lap. On the back of the photo was a name and she never heard of. So she folded up the picture and put it in her pocket. So she tells her friend at school the next day because she didn't want her mom to know she was snooping. She continues to researc the name she saw in the back of the picture because she saw that she looks alot like him. She found out that the man she was researching is in jail and she decides to try and go visit him. On her visit the man tells her that he doesn't want to know her because of how her mom treated hime years ago. He continues to be very mean and abrupt to her and she starts crying and storms out of the building. Se eventually makes it back home crying and her mother is concerned. So she tells her mother everything that happen and she says how thankful she was to her mother for keeping her safe for all these years. Obviously I will go more in detail once I get deeper in the creation of this movie and hopefully it would be in the 5 minutes window for the requirement.
