Title Research: Underwater

  • How many titles are displayed in the opening sequence to the film? In the opening sequence there were about 16 titles. It would've been more but I counted all the actors as one title. Its funny because all of the movies I've researched have had 16 titles as well.
  • What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? In the opening sequence, they prioritized the newspaper articles by zooming it in and showing the newspaper titles. It also clearly showed dates and names for people.
  • What connotations do the images carry? The images in the outset of the film has a negative connotation because the newspaper articles were mainly about the negative stories.
  • How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? As was said in the previous question, the newspaper articles were about negative events which creates a sense of suspension, which is a key part of the thriller genre. They also put various pictures of newspaper articles to show the audience its not as common as you think.
  • How does the film establish an enigma from the outset? The film establishes the the enigma through the images of the newspaper articles, Because there were so many articles it wasn't on the screen for that long, which makes people wonder whats going on.
  • What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? The strategies used to appeal to its target audience is the black and white newspaper articles because it lets their audience know that something is about to happen. Their audience usually enjoys not knowing what is going to happen next.
  • How has technology been used effectively? The technology they used to create this film is a big part of the movie. They used editing to make it a suspenseful start with the sound and the zooming in and out for the news articles. Elements like this add a great addition to the thriller genre.
